Commercial Partnership Development

The right partnerships can do much more than put a logo on a poster.

A great commercial partnership should be about more than a sponsorship cheque or some extra brand exposure. At its best, it creates genuine opportunities for everyone involved, connecting businesses with new audiences, building brand value and generating revenue.

But finding the right partner, developing an offer that makes commercial sense and getting a deal across the line isn't always straightforward.

That's where Why Marketing comes in.

With nearly 20 years of experience bringing brands, audiences and experiences together, I help businesses identify, develop and deliver commercial partnerships that go beyond the obvious.

From sponsorship and naming rights to creative brand collaborations, media partnerships and experiential activations, I combine strategic thinking, commercial experience and a healthy dose of creativity to make partnerships work.

Finding the opportunity. Building the value. Making it happen.

Every organisation has something valuable to offer. The trick is understanding what that is, who might want it and how to turn it into a compelling commercial proposition.

For an event organiser, that might mean creating sponsorship opportunities that help fund an ambitious programme. For a venue, it could mean developing premium experiences or new commercial assets. For a brand, it might be finding an authentic way to reach a new audience through entertainment, culture or shared experiences.

Whatever the opportunity, I start by understanding what each party wants to achieve and finding the common ground.

Who is it for?

I specialise in organisations where audiences, brands and experiences intersect, including:

  • Events, festivals and promoters looking to develop sponsorship revenue and build stronger commercial relationships.

  • Venues and visitor attractions seeking naming rights, premium product partnerships or new revenue opportunities.

  • Entertainment, media and content businesses wanting to connect their audiences or IP with relevant commercial brands.

  • Brands and businesses looking for creative, credible ways to reach and engage audiences through partnerships and experiences.

  • Organisations with existing partnerships that want to review, strengthen or develop their commercial offering.

Whether you're building something new or looking to unlock more value from what you already have, the right partnership can make a significant difference.

Where I can help

  • Commercial partnership strategy: Identifying opportunities to generate revenue, extend reach, build brand value and support wider business objectives.

  • Sponsorship development & packaging: Understanding the value of your assets, developing attractive sponsorship packages and creating compelling commercial propositions.

  • Partner identification & outreach: Researching and identifying potential partners, developing tailored approaches and opening relevant conversations.

  • Naming rights & major partnerships: Developing opportunities for high-value, longer-term relationships that offer benefits beyond traditional sponsorship.

  • Brand collaborations & activations: Creating distinctive experiences and campaigns that bring partnerships to life and give audiences something worth engaging with.

  • Media partnerships: Working with appropriate media partners to increase campaign reach, develop mutually beneficial promotional opportunities and make marketing budgets work harder.

  • Negotiation & partnership management: Supporting commercial discussions, aligning expectations, developing mutually beneficial terms and helping partners deliver against agreed objectives.

The aim isn't to create the longest possible list of potential sponsors. It's to identify the right opportunities, develop a proposition worth investing in and build relationships that can deliver meaningful results.

Why work with Why Marketing?

I've spent much of my career finding creative ways to bring brands and audiences together, and making sure the commercial thinking stacks up.

At The Walt Disney Company, I developed partnerships that connected some of the world's best-loved entertainment IP with New Zealand brands, including a collaboration between Disney, Cordis Auckland and Hoyts that helped deliver a 35% increase in High Tea bookings.

At Pop-up Globe, I secured naming rights and developed commercial partnerships that supported the business while creating meaningful opportunities for the brands involved.

More recently, I've developed sponsorship propositions and partnership opportunities for World Buskers Festival, and as Head of Business Development for Live Nation Venues New Zealand, I've worked across corporate partnerships, commercial revenue, premium experiences and the Spark Arena naming rights relationship.

That experience has given me a valuable perspective from both sides of the conversation. I understand what an organisation needs from a commercial partner, but equally importantly, what a brand needs in return for its investment.

And I know that the most successful partnerships aren't necessarily the ones with the biggest logos or the flashiest presentations.

They're the ones where everyone has a good reason to be involved.

Let's find your next commercial opportunity.

How we'll work together

There isn't a one-size-fits-all approach to commercial partnerships.

You may already have sponsorship opportunities available but need help developing the proposition and approaching the right brands. Perhaps you're starting from scratch and need to understand what your business could offer a potential partner. Or you might have established relationships that could be delivering considerably more value.

Depending on your objectives, I can help with:

Strategy & opportunity development

Reviewing your existing assets, audiences and commercial opportunities, identifying potential revenue streams and developing a partnership strategy.

Partnership propositions & sales materials

Creating tailored sponsorship packages, commercial presentations and compelling reasons for prospective partners to get involved.

Partner prospecting & negotiation

Identifying suitable businesses, developing approaches, opening conversations and supporting the journey from initial interest through to agreement.

Activation & relationship development

Helping turn agreed partnerships into engaging experiences and campaigns, while ensuring that commercial commitments and partner objectives remain front of mind.

We can work together on a defined project or establish an ongoing arrangement for partnership development and management.

The level of support, responsibilities and deliverables will be agreed from the outset, so you'll know exactly what to expect.
